BEFORE
WE FORGET
The elections have come and gone. The second phase of national
reconciliation, integration and development has started.
But it is has become predominantly important, vitally crucial and urgently necessary that issues
and situations are veritably located and understood in their true, real and proper
perspectives particularly and specifically as it relates to the Niger Delta
region.
In that context, Former Governor of Rivers State H/E Chibuike Rotimi
Amaechi is the central focus in this flash back. To the chagrin and utter
consternation of many people in the Niger Delta Region, Gov. Amaechi disagreed
with Former President Goodluck Jonathan. The disagreement was not only deep but
wide. But more incisively instructive was Amaechi's reasons for disagreeing
with For President Jonathan.
Amaechi's stand orally and by his actions were trenchantly clear – “the
disagreement they had was nothing personal, it was on principles”. Simply put
Amaechi felt that Jonathan was not doing enough to develop the already
devastated region.
He disagreed with Jonathan's style and approaches to some issues and
infact the reasons Jonathan gave for not doing much for the region.
Amaechi took another route to seek both the political and developmental
salvation of the region. It turned out to be the All Progressive Congress, a
Party he staked his honour, relationship with his Kinsmen and threw in
everything he had to make sure the Party succeeded. Though APC was said to have
lost Rivers State but won at the Federal level.
Now we are at the dawn of this second phase that has to do with
reconciliation, integration and development, (appointment of Federal officers)
Amaechi and indeed the Niger Delta region has to be fully carried along. This
is very important because Amaechi represents not himself but his people (the
Niger Delta region) and therefore Amaechi has to be in a position where he can
contribute in such a manner that will impact meaningfully on the lives of the
Niger Delta inhabitants.
This is because the Niger Delta people who watched Amaechi's mantra of
“Jonathan has failed us” are
busy watching to see how and what role Amaechi will play in this new government
and indeed in the lives of Niger Delta people.
Amaechi must be conscious of this fact and both Mr. President and the
APC Party must be conscious of this important fact while sharing Federal
positions to avoid making any costly mistake and creating wrong impressions or
sending out wrong signals.
