He has been engaged in political battles since his major entry into
politics through the ballot. Ex-Gov. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers state is
no doubt not new to the rough terrains of Nigerian politics even as a student,
he was neck deep into University politics and unionism.
The high point of his fights would have been the 2007 legal tussle
where he was given a landmark judgment that sacked an already seated governor,
Celestine Omehia, and he was sworn-in after Omehia's five month journey in the
Brick House. But all that seems to be history as Amaechi again scored another
major by leading 4 other strong governors and lawmakers to join the opposition
party, APC, strengthened it and brought it from the rear to the frontline as
the ruling party. He was the pillar of support for the emergence of President
Muhammadu Buhari as the APC presidential candidate in the face of more
appealing candidates like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Governor
Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso. It was Amaechi's shot that pulmetted Buhari to greater
glory into Aso Rock while the same Davidic shot brought down the gigantic
former President Goodluck Jonathan, and sent him back to Otuoke.
But the former governor prefered as the Lion of the Niger Delta and the
Nemesis of the PDP, did not make it as a running mate to Buhari, in spite of
being his presumed strongest political ally, East of the Niger. The
masterstroke to ensure an ultimate win for the APC did not favour him
considering the larger voting strength and popularity of his party, APC in the
South West zone.
With Jonathan out of power and Buhari now on the saddle of a multi
ethnic nation divided into six geopolitical zones, the man who is considered
the ACE of the broom trotting APC, Rotimi Amaechi is expected to clinch a plum
job to help strengthen Buhari's government which he sacrificed his name,
integrity and even his throne to ensure a win. He is also expected to become
the rallying point for the people of the South East and the South South, who
were 'blackmailed' and conscripted into supporting the unpopular 'brother' of
theirs, President Jonathan.
These are the major considerations in assigning a new role to the
'Diamond' king who just turned 50.
But so much has been touted in the media about him and what he may get.
While no one is certain of his wishes, the truth be told that most of those who
do not like him for whatever reasons have since gone ahead to consult to ensure
that he is ridiculed. Surprisingly, what they speculate he may wish to become
may be the reverse of what hw really wants.
For me, Amaechi may not be everyone's toast, yet he is on everyone's
lips, friends and foes, lovers and haters alike SO the issue of what role he
should be assigned should not even be in contention.
The controversy, arguments and speculations surrounding his appointment
is unjustified. What is expedient is that the wishes of his friends for him
become a reality while his haters must be disappointed.
While his supporters, friends and well wishers are battling with
occasional anxiety mixed with faith and his enemies are wrapped in fear, the
question is: Was there really a cause why Amaechi fought this major fight? If
there was a cause, was it really worth it?
For me and may be you reading now, in the words
of the song writer, "it wasn't easy but it was worth it", the fight
that he fought.
