Though President Goodluck Jonathan has been commended for his show of sportsmanship in the just concluded presidential elections, many do not know what informed his decision to congratulate his opponent, General Muhammadu Buhari. Information available to The Beam by a highly placed source in Abuja revealed that it was a phone call by the Secretary. General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban ki Moon that save the day.

We reliably gathered that Ban Ki Moon had called former President Olusegun Obasanjo and urged him to reach him to alert the President of a plot by some influential ex-Generals to convince him not to accept defeat as the results were being announced by Prof. Attahiru Jega, the Chairman of INEC.

The UN scribe was said to have sought Obasanjo's help since he was unable to speak with Jonathan directly as his mobile phone may have been with his security aides.

Obasanjo had declined, saying that he was not welcomed at Aso Rock for the role he played in supporting Buhari against the president. He, therefore urged Ban Ki Moon to call on General Gowon who is said to be very close to the president and could easily gain access to him. Ban Ki Moon quickly called Gowon, who at that point was also in Abuja. Gowon was said to have quickly made way to Aso Rock where he sought to see the President in private.

Jonathan who was monitoring the results of the election with some of his aides at that time, got up, and went into a private room with Gowon. The former Head of State was said to have called Ban Ki Moon and quickly handed over the phone to the president.

The UN Secretary General quickly alerted Jonathan of the plot to have himself and Buhari killed in order to pave way for a Military take over, probably by the Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh. According to him, those who had advised him not to hand over power to Buhari were those responsible for the plot.

Apart from the plot, Ban Ki Moon was said to have revealed to the President how the money in the Dedicated Crude Account was shared by his foot soldiers under the guise that they were going to use the money for Jonathan's reelection bid. He also confirmed to the President that the US Government was already in possession of details of where each of the recipients had stashed away the money in foreign accounts. Jonathan was said to have been jolted by this revelations.

According to our source, the UN scribe advised Jonathan against being used by the cabal who wanted to seize power through the barrel, as he also will be killed in the process.

At this point, Jonathan put a call through to Buhari and congratulated him for his victory even though the results of three states were yet to be announced by Jega.

Immediately the news was aired as a breaking news on television, it was said that Gen. Babangida and Chief. Edwin Clark put calls to Mrs. Jonathan, informing her of her husband's action, which according to them had dealt a major blow on their plan. At this point, the First Lady quickly rushed to confront her husband on why he put a call to Buhari.

Jonathan was quoted to have asked her, "haven't we lost?” It was then she broke down in tears. The President who was shocked that there was a conspiracy to assassinate him queried the wife if it were better that he would be assassinated than to hand over peacefully.
